Planning Your Celestún Journey
-
The drive from Mérida to Celestún takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, depending on traffic and your pickup location.
-
We always recommend an early departure from Mérida. Arriving in Celestún earlier in the day generally offers better opportunities for wildlife viewing, with more bird activity and more to observe throughout the reserve.
An early start also means fewer visitors and a quieter experience on the water, while giving you more flexibility to enjoy the rest of your day at a relaxed pace.
-
The private boat experience typically lasts between 1 hour and 15 minutes and 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on conditions in the reserve and the route taken that day.
-
Yes. The boat is reserved exclusively for you and your group, and your federally certified private guide accompanies you throughout the experience.
We depart from the official tourist boat facility at the Ría Celestún, established by the Government of Yucatán as a visitor access point to the reserve. From here, the boat takes you through the estuary and mangrove areas in search of flamingos, native birds and other wildlife.
-
Flamingos can be seen in the Celestún area throughout the year, but December through March is generally one of the best periods to visit, when larger concentrations gather in the estuary to rest and feed.
As with any wildlife experience, their numbers and location vary with the season and natural conditions, so sightings and the number of flamingos present can never be guaranteed.
-
Yes. Children of all ages are welcome on the boat tour, and there is no minimum age requirement.
Each boat accommodates a maximum of 8 people, including your private guide.
-
Yes. Celestún and Uxmal can be combined in a full-day private journey. With an early start, you can experience the Celestún Biosphere Reserve and its private boat ride before continuing to Uxmal.
As every VESTIGE journey is private, the day can be adjusted to your interests and preferred pace.
-
The drive from Celestún to Uxmal takes approximately 2 hours. Combining both destinations creates a full-day journey that brings together two very different sides of Yucatán — the wildlife and coastal landscapes of Celestún and the remarkable Maya architecture of Uxmal.
-
Yes. After the private boat experience in Celestún, we can return to Mérida and continue with a private city tour through the historic center and some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The day remains completely flexible. You can choose to enjoy a seafood lunch by the beach in Celestún before returning, or head back to Mérida and have lunch in the city before beginning your city tour.
